Educating yourself about alcohol consumption is the best way to ensure that you are making the choices that are most appropriate for you.

Tools To Help

Standard Drinks Calculator

It can be useful in gauging your alcohol consumption to use a “standard drink” measure so that you can compare the amount of alcohol that you are consuming in each drink and the total amount consumed. In Canada, a “standard drink” contains 0.6 ounces of pure alcohol.

The following are all equal to “one standard drink”. In other words, these drinks are all equivalent in terms of alcohol content.

  • 12 ounces (341 ml) of beer or cider (5% alc)

  • 5 ounces (142 ml) of wine (12% alc)

  • 1.5 counces (43 ml) of spirits (40% alc)

The “Right Amount” website has a more detailed calculator that will enable you to figure out exactly how much alcohol you are consuming in various situations. It’s easy to use and is located here: Standard Drinks Calculator.
