Part of the beauty of football is that it exists as a week-to-week sport, where the weight of each individual loss feels like the season is over, and the weight of each individual victory serves as an open invitation to make travel arrangements for the Super Bowl to make. .

For the Cleveland Brownsconsecutive losses for the Giants And Robbers have felt like the doomsday scenario of all doomsday scenarios, both inside and outside the team facility. From self-inflicted wounds like early penalties, dropped passes and poor tackles, to a bloodless offense that has scored less than 20 points in a game, not much has gone right for Cleveland in four games.

Then again, the great thing about football is that a single victory can often serve as a secret elixir to a team’s problems. A magical remedy that can get a season back on track in an instant.

So as the Browns get ready for a Week 5 showdown with the Washington commandersthe players realize how much a win could right so many wrongs from this early part of the season.

“Could be huge, especially a road win with a great team like the Commanders,” quarterback Deshaun Watson said this week. “It can definitely start something great and that’s what we believe, but we have to win today. We have to win (every training day) and then go out there and just play freely and try to get a W, and get a W on the road against a very good Commanders team, then that can really get something going and we can continue to build on that confidence and momentum.”

Like a slumped basketball player watching one shot go into the basket, one win can sometimes lead to a series of wins. At 1-3 on the season, the Browns could desperately use one of those to get things moving in the right direction.

Sometimes a win is even the perfect recipe to cure all a team’s warts. Veteran guard Joel Bitonio know that.

“It’s a lot easier to correct mistakes after a win, but honestly we just have to play better,” Bitonio said. “Scoring less than 20 points per game on offense isn’t enough. And it really hurts ourselves. Guys are good in the NFL. People are going to lose blocks, people are going to get beat in coverage and things like that. But if we MAs can eliminate, if we can eliminate things that are the penalties, the things that hurt ourselves, I think we will be in a better position and a win will put the team back in the right direction.”

Momentum is a reality in sports, not just a cliché that fans talk about. Watson said it, and so did the wide star Amari Kuiperwho has had a particularly rough start to his 2024 campaign. Considering how difficult it can be to win from week to week in this sport, he understands how one win can change the outlook for the season in Cleveland.

“Wins are very difficult in this league,” Cooper said. “So when you win one, it creates some momentum. Obviously you have to carry that over to the next week, but it’s never a bad thing to win in this competition.”

There is a mutual understanding in the Browns’ locker room that there is still plenty of time to accomplish everything they hope to accomplish as a team. However, that belief could quickly disappear if they fall to 1-4. Conversely, a 2-3 record — while still concerning — could herald the start of something special.

“Count ’em, count ’em. That’s what we need,” safety Grant Delpit said. “One win on our beltway is a win. They are a big man. It is a huge confidence boost for the team. We have not played our brand of football and we know that is the reason we have been defeated. found ways to win.” We will lose games and we will only win when we stop finding ways to lose. So listen, a win on the road will put some fire on us and hopefully carry that into the second quarter of the season.”
