An officer shot an armed man early Friday morning in Southeast Portland, the Portland Police Bureau said.

The man who was shot, whose name has not yet been released, was carrying an air rifle and a knife, according to police.

Officers arrived on the scene around 12:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a man with a gun “yelling and making threats inside an apartment building” on Southeast Lambert Street near 54th Avenue in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood, the police department said in a statement.

Officers set up a perimeter around the building and the agency’s Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team attempted to communicate with the man. Local residents were told via the PublicAlerts system to stay indoors.

An officer with a rifle shot the man at 1:22 a.m., wounding the man, police said. Officials have not said what caused the shooting or provided any details.

The severity of the man’s injuries is not yet publicly known.

The officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, as is customary, while the shooting is investigated.
