Festus Keyamo, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Space Development, has announced that the return of Emirates Airlines to Nigeria will pave the way for local airlines to access more international destinations.

Keyamo made the statement following the return of Emirates, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to Nigeria after a two-year hiatus. Speaking in Lagos on Wednesday after arriving aboard an Emirates flight from the UAE, the minister assured that the airline’s return is permanent.

He explained that the recent discussions surrounding the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UAE were aimed at securing international routes for local airlines. According to Keyamo, Nigerian airlines now have the option to fly to any destination within the UAE.

“With the return of Emirates, there is more competition on international routes, which is essential to promote healthy competition,” Keyamo said. “A competitive environment will lead to better prices, which will benefit Nigerians.”

Keyamo emphasized the strategic importance of Dubai as a global hub connecting numerous countries. He also revealed that local airlines now have the option to enter into code-sharing agreements with Emirates, with Nigerian airlines having the right of first refusal.

The minister thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support in facilitating the return of Emirates and re-establishing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the UAE. He acknowledged that the strained relationship, including visa suspensions and the suspension of Emirates flights to Nigeria, had negatively impacted many Nigerians with investments and interests in the UAE.

“The consequences for relations between the two countries, including visa suspensions and flight cancellations, have been damaging, especially for Nigerians with significant investments in the UAE,” Keyamo explained. “This agreement is not just for national pride; it is a victory for the Nigerian people.”

Keyamo concluded by highlighting the importance of the newly signed BASA, which he said redefines the aviation relationship between Nigeria and the UAE, making it healthier and more open, which will ultimately benefit Nigerians.
