Bronny James talked about his attitude after sharing the court with his father and teammate LeBron for the first time during the Los Angeles Lakers’ 118-114 preseason loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

“I always think ‘That’s my dad,’ because he’s literally my dad,” James said after the game, per Ramona Shelburne of ESPN. “So I just go out there and when I play, he’s just my teammate. That’s all I’m thinking about at this point.”

At the beginning of the second quarter, the two were on the court together.

The pair became the first active father-son duo in NBA history after the Lakers selected the younger James with the 55th pick in the 2024 draft.

Bronny was drafted by the Lakers after his freshman year at USC. He did not make his season debut for the Trojans until December 2023 after suffering cardiac arrest during offseason training prior to the 2023-2024 season.

The 20-year-old reflects on his journey to the NBA, which allows him to remain calm despite the history he creates with his father.

“Just take everything that’s happened to me this year and get up every day and keep working,” James said, according to Shelburne. “I just find the fuel every day to get up and start working.”

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer was amazed by the pair’s achievement. He finished Sunday’s game with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists, shooting 66.7% from the field.

WOW, THAT WAS SURREAL!!

The former Trojans guard is still finding his way on offense in two preseason contests, scoring just two points and grabbing three rebounds while shooting 1-7 in a total of 29 minutes on the floor.

Bronny was much better defensively, blocking three shots in his preseason debut Friday. He revealed that head coach JJ Redick stressed the importance of being a “pest” on defense.

“JJ really emphasized playing defense and being a pest on defense,” Bronny said. “So that’s what I tried to focus on, getting my feet on the floor.”

It may be difficult for him to fill a regular-season role on a Lakers team with playoff aspirations, but he could get more minutes in the future if he can remain effective defensively.

He will want to continue improving his skills during the next preseason game in Los Angeles, which is Thursday’s match against the Milwaukee Bucks.
