The family of a New Jersey high school cheerleader who was seriously injured in a collision earlier this year is suing the Newark school board for negligence — as the wheelchair-bound victim continues to struggle to recover from the traumatic event.

Chiara Jones, 19, a senior at Arts High School, had just gotten off the bus after a cheerleading competition Feb. 4 in South Jersey when a maniacal driver struck her on Martin Luther King Boulevard, the lawsuit said.

She was hospitalized and in critical condition for weeks. She was unable to talk or walk due to a traumatic brain injury, according to People.

Chiara Jones, 19, a senior at Arts High School, had just gotten off the bus after a cheerleading competition Feb. 4 in South Jersey when a maniacal driver struck her on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Months later, she is still struggling to recover from injuries that her family’s attorney, James Lynch, says are “severe and permanent.”

On Monday, the attorney announced a lawsuit that names the Newark school board, among others, as defendants — and seeks an unspecified amount of damages to offset her skyrocketing legal bills.

The lawsuit also names the bus driver, who allegedly failed to deploy the vehicle’s stop sign mechanism.

“There are many who bear responsibility in this absolutely heartbreaking tragedy,” Lynch said in a news release accompanying the lawsuit.

“The two drivers were reckless in the operation of their vehicles and furthermore, Arts High School and the Newark Board of Education were grossly negligent in failing to properly enforce and monitor essential safety procedures when disembarking the bus.”

She was hospitalized and in critical condition for weeks. She could not talk or walk due to a traumatic brain injury.
Despite the catastrophic crash on Sunday evening, the suspect, Mia’Jah Burton, 33, continued to drive.

The teen’s mother, Tomeika Jones, told News 12 New Jersey in March that she desperately misses talking to her daughter.

“We mourn the loss of someone who used to be,” Jones said. “It was a challenge.

“I just never thought this,” she continued. “We are devastated.”

Despite the catastrophic crash on Sunday evening, the suspect, Mia’Jah Burton, 33, continued to drive, People reported.

Police arrested her about a month later and charged her with a litany of crimes, including leaving the scene of an accident involving serious bodily injury and assault with a motor vehicle, the outlet reported.
