Dog bit cyclist during charity ride in Beaufort Co. declared ‘dangerous’

BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) – Beaufort County has declared a dog “dangerous” that attacked and seriously injured a woman during a charity bike ride last month.

After a hearing Thursday, the county said the German shepherd would either have to be confined indoors, in a cage with a top and bottom, or on a leash and muzzle, along with signs posted on the property.

County Manager Brian Alligood says it’s rare for them to seize an animal, for example if the owners don’t comply with a containment order.

The 56-year-old woman was bitten on September 14. She was one of 18 cyclists participating in the Aurora Farm & Fish Festival Ride when the dog came out of a yard on Idalia Road.

The victim tells friends she just got stitches on Friday and has to walk with a cane or walker.

Records show the same dog bit another woman in 2015 when it was still a puppy. No charges were filed against the dog’s owner.
