NFL officials fined Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman $66,666 for unnecessary roughness and helmet use during a Week 4 game.

Perryman received the largest fine of the 2024 season. The play for which Perryman received a significant fine included a Kansas City Chiefs tackle on Kareem Hunt.

Hunt ran up the middle and Perryman lowered his head and hit Hunt directly on the side of the helmet. No flag was thrown at the spectacle, which would indicate one of two things. The referees did not see an offense or did not think the flag should be thrown during play.

However, it is clear that the on-field officials and the NFL’s disciplinary process had different views on the incident.

Last week, Perryman had eight tackles in the Chargers’ 17-10 loss to Kansas City. The linebacker played 71 percent of the defensive snaps.

The league deemed Perryman’s hit worthy of the highest penalty of the year. This followed the Week 4 suspension of Chargers safety Derwin James.

Perryman, like his teammate, was considered a repeat offender.

Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh came to James’ defense after news broke of his one-game suspension.

“He is a shining star in every way,” Harbaugh said in the team transcript. “As a teammate, as a captain of this team, as a two-time Walter Payton Man of the Year (nominee), everything he has done for the Chargers and the entire league, he is a shining star, a shining example. … He doesn’t want to hurt anyone, any other player he’s playing with. He wants it to be a competition, he always thinks about it. He wants to do it exactly how the NFL wants people to handle the game.

It is highly likely that Harbaugh will do the same for Perryman. The Chargers are entering their bye week, but will return in Week 6 to face the Denver Broncos.

The Chargers will have to play a league matchup without one of their best defensemen.

The suspension of two Chargers players in the following weeks clearly indicates that the league is cracking down on the team’s defense.

Perryman returned to the Los Angeles organization in the offseason. He was selected by the Chargers in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

The linebacker returned to the franchise he called “home.” In four games, Perryman recorded 30 tackles, 22 tackles and a sack.
