Neighbors in Hyde Park raise awareness about dangerous intersection

CINCINNATI (WXIX) -Neighbors in Hyde Park are coming together to raise awareness about a dangerous intersection after multiple car crashes were reported.

Aaron Grossman lives near the intersection of Delta and Observatory Avenues and has witnessed numerous accidents outside his home.

He expressed concern for the safety of the community, especially the children, and emphasized the urgent need for action to prevent serious or fatal injuries.

“It’s scary, and even scarier for our children. We’re just waiting for people to get seriously or fatally injured, Grossman said.

He explains that once a wedding party was hit by a car, with the driver crashing into a fence near their house.

“It is the second time that a driver ends up on our property. A few people from the wedding party were taken to the hospital. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured,” Grossman said.

They were forced to place a cross in their garden with the message: ‘No one has died here yet. Help us prevent the next accident,” along with a QR code for a petition to improve the safety of the intersection.

The cross is intended to draw attention to drivers to take it slow and pay attention.

“There were people who got hurt, a wedding party was disrupted, people had to go to the hospital, but until someone dies, we’re afraid nothing will be done,” Grossman explained.

Cincinnati Police Officer William Holthaus, who patrols the intersection, identified drivers running red lights on Delta Avenue as a major cause of crashes. He cited a recent incident where a driver ran a red light and caused a collision right in front of him.

In 2022, Rachel Bernstein was in a car accident at that intersection as Grossman and his wife helped her and her son out of the car.

“A man coming from Erie turned left onto the Delta and came into the square; he was speeding, ran a red light, hit us, spun us in the air once, and then we rolled upside down,” Bernstein said.

She explains that she would like the petition to bring about change at the intersection.

Officer Holthaus stated that police are working with traffic and technology to increase the safety of the intersection.
