Paul Merson doesn’t know what to expect from the ‘funny’ Newcastle United when they play Everton on Saturday.

The Magpies are preparing to face Everton at Goodison Park as they look to prove their performance against Manchester City was no fluke.

Newcastle United were much better last week, thanks to a poor performance against Fulham. Alan Shearer thought Newcastle looked much more like themselves against Manchester City as Anthony Gordon’s penalty secured a 1-1 draw.

Gordon will start up front against Everton on Saturday in the absence of Alexander Isak, while the Scouser take on his former club.

For Newcastle it is a chance to keep pace with the leading group, with Eddie Howe’s side in seventh place after six games. They have 11 points on the board, four behind leaders Liverpool.

Paul Merson gives his verdict on Everton vs Newcastle

Although Newcastle are in a strong position in the table, it is difficult to predict how they will perform at Goodison Park.

The Magpies were excellent against Manchester City, but it was the first time this season that Eddie Howe’s side had consistently performed for more than 90 minutes.

That may be why Paul Merson told Sportskeeda that he doesn’t think Newcastle United will beat Everton this weekend.

“Newcastle are a funny team because I think they are lucky with the points they have already this season,” he said.

“Everton kept their ship level with a good win over Crystal Palace last weekend. So there is not much pressure on them now compared to the previous weeks. That helps Everton more than you think and it could be a huge boost for them.

“When it clicks, Newcastle are a very dangerous team. But the problem is that I don’t know if they will appear on the pitch like that. It’s basically the same for both teams here, you don’t know what you’re going to get from them. is exactly the reason I’m going for a draw here.

“If both teams play as well as they can, Newcastle will win. However, I’m not sure that will be the case here. A draw seems more likely if both teams find the back of the net.”

Merson’s prediction: Everton 1 Newcastle 1

Everton picked up their first win before taking on Newcastle

Everton go into the weekend in sixteenth place in the Premier League and have won just one game all season.

That came last week, when they beat Crystal Palace 2-1. It was a big win for Sean Dyche, who had seen his side squander leads against Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Leicester City.

Dyche is expecting a tough match against Newcastle and knows his side will have to deliver a consistent performance to get the result they want.

But the Toffees will take confidence from the fact that they played very well against Newcastle United last season.

They won 3-0 at Goodison Park, with Newcastle playing quite terribly on Merseyside. Kieran Trippier made a few crucial mistakes as the tired Toon side slumped to a rather embarrassing defeat.

In the return match, Newcastle played better, but still failed to win. Newcastle and Everton played out a 1–1 draw, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s penalty canceling out Alexander Isak’s opener.

Paul Merson expects the same score on Saturday evening, but Howe will certainly prepare his team for victory.
