Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says he is the biggest loser in the upcoming local government elections as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not contest.

On September 24, interim committee chairmen loyal to Fubara reportedly defected to the Action Peoples Party (APP), ahead of the October 5 LGA elections.

Earlier today, a mob besieged the PDP Secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state capital, to protest the conduct of the elections.

The protest was reportedly organized by loyalists of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

At a meeting on Thursday, Fubara emphasized that the show must go on — with or without the platform that brought him into office.

“In this election, I am the biggest loser; my party is not participating. But because of the Supreme Court ruling that there must be elected officials to manage the affairs of local government, I as governor must comply with it,” he said.

“What we are doing here is ensuring that even if my party does not participate, the council process should stand.

“A good number of people here are my party people… and you don’t even benefit from it and you support it here. So, what’s the problem?”
