The Detroit Tigers shocked the Houston Astros on Wednesday afternoon by winning 5-2 to sweep the wild card series in two games. The Tigers won this game on the road in Houston, ending the Astros’ streak of seven straight years in the ALCS or better.

The Tigers were up 1-0 before falling behind 2-1 in the seventh inning.

The Tigers showed amazing determination in the top of the eighth inning, scoring four runs off relievers Ryan Pressly and Josh Hader. The big bang was a bases-clearing triple by Tigers infielder Andy Ibanez off Hader.

That not only helped open up the game for Detroit, it also made Tigers history.

According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

that is the first go-ahead pinch-hit single in the 8th inning or later in Tigers postseason history

Considering the Tigers are among the longest-standing franchises in sports, that’s quite amazing to see. Detroit has also been to the World Series several times in the 2000s, but hasn’t found a way to pull off a late hit like this.

The 31-year-old Ibanez hit .241 with five home runs and 32 RBI this regular season. He also scored 30 runs and stole two bases in 224 at-bats.

Ibanez is a four-year veteran of the Texas Rangers and Tigers and is a lifelong .256 hitter.

The Tigers now advance to the American League Division Series, where they will face the Cleveland Guardians. First pitch between the two American League Central rivals is scheduled for 1:08 PM ET.
