Legendary climber Chris Sharma made a surprising comeback to competition this weekend in New Jersey, joining the majority of teenage competitors in an event that was open to all.

Sharma, 43, has rarely competed in the past two decades, focusing primarily on outdoor climbing, where he has created some of the world’s toughest and most iconic routes.

At the event in New Jersey, part of the North American Cup Series, he put in a strong performance against climbers less than half his age, winning the $750 second prize in the main event on Saturday.

The winner was Sergey Lakhno, a 19-year-old from Seattle.

Sharma wasn’t the only veteran among the 51 men: in sixth place was 37-year-old Vasya Vorotnikov, the 2012 U.S. sport climbing champion.

The women’s division was won by Jojo Chi, a 15-year-old from New Jersey who is the reigning national bouldering champion in her age group.

The event at the GOAT Climbing Gym in Hackensack was part of a series that primarily attracts top climbers in their teens and early 20s, who compete for a small cash prize and points toward national rankings.

Sharma, who grew up in Santa Cruz, had a breakthrough performance at age 14, when he won the US Open bouldering championship. While still a teenager, he won medals in international competitions.

He lives in Spain with his wife and two children and runs two gyms in the Barcelona area.

Sharma’s final climb of the race begins about 1 hour and 30 minutes into the video below.
