The late actress filmed the indie horror film in 2023, before passing away in July 2024

In early October, the public will be able to see the last film of the late Shelley Duvall.

Duvall, who died in July at age 75 from complications from diabetes, appeared in her final film The Forest Hills. The trailer for the indie horror film was released on Friday, September 13.

Her recent role comes more than 20 years off-screen, as she last acted in Manna from Heaven (2002).

The Forest Hills was directed by Scott Goldberg and follows Rico (Chiko Mendez), the son of Duvall’s character, as he spirals deeper into madness. He is haunted by dark old secrets and nightmarish visions of becoming a werewolf. The film is set in the Catskill Mountains, where Rico grows increasingly fearful while struggling with his tumultuous relationship with his mother.

Goldberg was eager to work with the Hollywood legend, saying he called Duvall in 2023 and asked her to play a supporting role. “Shelley is a Hollywood icon. I’m glad she’s getting the chance to show that she still has talent,” Goldberg told PEOPLE last year.

Duvall was filmed remotely from her Texas home and directed via Zoom.

“Acting again, it’s so much fun. It enriches your life,” Duvall told PEOPLE at the time.

“It’s great to be back,” she said in an interview for the film. “I really love this work. It can really help you get out of a slump.”

Before her death, The Appearance actress told the New York Times that she was motivated to do the film because she “wanted to get back into acting,” adding, “And then this guy kept calling, and so I finally did it.”

Duvall retired from acting after he Manna from heaven. In 2016, Duvall appeared in the Doctor Phil show that was widely criticized at the time for exploiting her mental health issues. In 2021, she expressed regret over her appearance with The Hollywood Reporter.

After her death, Goldberg told PEOPLE how he will remember the actress after her death.

“Shelley leaves behind a tremendous legacy and will be missed by so many people, including myself,” he said. “I am proud of her for overcoming adversity to return to acting and will always be grateful for her friendship and kindness.”
