According to officials with the South Carolina Education Lottery, one woman has spent the exact same amount on lottery tickets over the past five years.

The Aiken woman’s dedication to buying only $3 scratch-off tickets finally paid off: She won the $100,000 lottery top prize, officials said in a news release.

“I told myself I would win it someday,” she said in the press release.

That day came when she stopped after breakfast to buy a scratch-off lottery ticket at the Price Shell gas station/convenience store on Whiskey Road in Aiken, the press release said.

She took the crossword-style card home and, sitting on her porch, scratched it open to reveal the six-figure prize, officials said.

Despite her determination and faith, the woman said, “I couldn’t believe it” that she had finally discovered a big winner, the press release said.

The woman did not say what she plans to do with her new windfall, but she did tell officials that she will continue playing the lottery — for a specific prize. She will continue her routine, saying she will only buy $3 tickets.

The winner is allowed to retain some privacy, as South Carolina is one of eleven states (along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia) where lottery winners can remain anonymous.

The odds of winning the top prize in the Lady Jumbo Bucks Crossword game were 1 in 600,000, according to the press release. One of the game’s eight top-prize winning tickets remains unclaimed, officials said.

According to the press release, Price Shell received a $1,000 commission for selling the claimed ticket.
