COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The oldest operating high school in Colorado Springs is getting a renovation next year. But before work begins, the school district is looking for community input.

Organizers I spoke to say they want to open the door, so to speak… to the community. They say public input is crucial to making sure the project is what the community wants.

Meet Connor Strange, the student body president at Palmer High School. He’s taking an active role in the renovation. He tells me it’s important for his fellow students’ voices to be heard. One big problem he’s seen and wants to see fixed is that the classrooms are too hot. He says some don’t have air conditioning.

“The beginning or the end of the school year is usually quite warm. That can make the classroom a little miserable sometimes, but you know the teachers are definitely doing their best to make the best of a bad situation.”

Tonight’s meeting starts at 5:00 and goes until about 7:00. It’s in the library at Palmer High School. That’s on Nevada Ave. and Platte Ave. downtown.

I also spoke with Jessica Wise, the spokesperson for d11. She told me that this is the first of many community meetings the school is planning.

“The design team has hired a couple of student employees who are going to be student ambassadors. They will help lead the community engagement, so we really want this to be very connected to the community.”

D11 says they plan to start the renovation in the fall of next year. We will be keeping an eye on this project and will give you the very latest news as it develops.
