Dakota Johnson made her directorial debut with the short film Loser BabySpeaking at Deadline’s TIFF studio, she discussed the possibilities of directing feature films in the future.

“I had so much fun making this and I think it felt incredibly natural and intuitive to me,” she said. “I’m open to making more things, and I don’t know exactly what right now. I feel like I still have a lot of growing to do in that area and a lot to learn, and I definitely don’t think I’m ready for that, but I could change my mind tomorrow, I don’t know.”

Loser Baby follows a group of friends from LA, led by Talia Bernstein (Ghosts), who also wrote the screenplay. Bernstein’s character Talia is underscored by the relatively sexless plateau of her long-term relationship—a situation she laments to her best friend (Blake Lee) and which reaches a climax of sorts at the birthday party of another friend (Ashley Madekwe).

“It’s absolutely ripped from reality,” Bernstein said of the film, which also stars Addison Timlin, Whitmer Thomas, Jessy Hodges and Ben Lewis. “I really wanted to see authentic queer relationships. “I was in a long-term relationship when I wrote this, and I was like, ‘I don’t see this[elsewhere]I don’t see this version of this relationship… I just wanted to explore that there are so many ways to be in a relationship.”

Johnson said she encouraged her cast to use “a lot of improvisation.” The structure of the script was all there and everything that was in the script ended up in the short, but there were times where I wanted them to push it a little bit further.”

The short film is produced by TeaTime Pictures, the production company of Johnson and Ro Donnelly.
