At a press conference in Haiti on Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stressed the urgency for both Israel and Hamas to resolve remaining critical issues to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, despite months of negotiations.

“Based on what I’ve seen, 90% is in agreement, but there are a few critical issues that remain,” Blinken stressed, referring to the Philadelphia corridor on the Gaza-Egypt border. He also noted that gaps exist regarding the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

President Joe Biden initially proposed a three-phase ceasefire on May 31, but key differences remain. Hamas’ opposition to any Israeli presence in the Philadelphia corridor and Israel’s insistence on keeping troops there have compounded the difficulty. Blinken is hoping for a shared solution approach involving the U.S., Qatar and Egypt.
