Red Cross urges critical measures to prepare for worsening disasters

ILLINOIS (WIFR) – The American Red Cross of Illinois is helping families prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month.

Deadly storms, fires, floods, heat and other disasters are becoming more frequent and more intense due to the climate crisis, according to the Red Cross.

Disasters can happen at any time and without warning, so families need to prepare to ensure the safety of their loved ones.

Tips from the Red Cross for preparation:

  • If you have to leave, think about where you are going, how you are going to get there and what you are taking with you. Plan in advance if you will need assistance or will take public transport.
  • Gather supplies such as food, water, and medications in a go kit and a stay-at-home kit. The go kit should contain three days’ worth of supplies that you can take with you. The stay-at-home kit should contain two weeks’ worth of food and water and a one-month supply of medications.
  • Consider other supplies for young children and pets, such as diapers and formula or leashes, food bowls and litter boxes.
  • Make a plan to reconnect with loved ones if the internet and phones go down. Write important phone numbers on a contact card and carry it with you.
  • Download the Red Cross emergency app for weather alerts and advice in English or Spanish.
  • Sign up for free emergency alerts from your local government.

The Red Cross also encourages people to donate and give blood to help others affected by disasters.
