TRANSCRIPT OF THE BROADCAST:
A year ago, a life was taken at this intersection where I stand, and the neighbors don’t want to see any more taken. I’m Ashley Engle, your Havana neighborhood reporter. I’m talking to neighbors about why they think this intersection is so dangerous and what they want to fix.

The intersection of Highway 90 and Lanier RD.

“Yesterday was the last accident with injuries”

One intersection that Rick Soskis mentions is…

“A dangerous nightmare”

Since 2022, there have been seven crashes at this intersection. One of those crashes was fatal, killing a student of Robert F. Munroe.

“Since the fatal accident, we have been working closely with the Florida DOT. We are trying to take as many safety precautions as possible.”

Andy Gay is the principal at Robert F. Munroe. He tells me that the school also works with the Florida Highway Patrol to monitor drivers’ speed.

Neighbors tell me they want the speed limit to be adjusted or a traffic light to be installed.

Currently, the speed limit in this area drops from 65 mph to 55 mph for the school zone, then drops from 55 mph to 35 mph.

“It’s very busy here, as you can see as we stand here. There are trucks and cars.”

Patricia Jefferson-Shaw of the Florida Highway Patrol tells me that peak traffic hours are usually 8 a.m., when school starts, and 3:30 p.m., when school ends.

Neighbors like Rick use this intersection often, but at those times it is nearly impossible to get there.

Rick and others are calling for change.

“Don’t wait, because it’s too dangerous.”

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, officers are stationed at this intersection to slow traffic during school hours.
